STORY: Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write her poem "America the Beautiful" at the summit of Pike's Peak. She is said to have been overwhelmed by the fantastic vistas, open skies, planted fields, and the majestic Rocky Mountains. Discovered by Lt. Col Zebulon Pike in 1806, and ranking only 31st among the 54 Fourteeners in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Pike's Peak rises to 14,110 ft above sea level, though it is only 8,000 ft above it's base. It is certainly the most famous Rocky Mountain peak, and is accessible by cog rail and dirt road. This Panorama was taken on a sub-peak just by Pike's Peak to feature Pike's Peak and to be in the sunshine rather than in the snow storm I was not dressed for. Even here it was 36º and my hands were blue and numb for the whole descent.
