STORY: Our only visit to The Vatican was a rainy, cloudy Sunday. The Pope had given a blessing that afternoon, before and after which we had enjoyed a fantastic personally guided tour in english and spanish by seminarians we knew through a friend's mother's meeting on a plane near Hawaii. We just missed the setup of the nativity scene by a few days, but it was a great day besides that and the rain and the serpentine umbrellaed and freezing queues to view the Basilica. The Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano, or St Peter's Basilica is the tomb site of St Peter, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. Truly the most awesome basilica I have seen. It is a basilica and not a cathedral, as it is not the seat of a bishop. One of the greatest works of art on planet Earth resides here, the Pietà, by Michelangelo, a larger than life marble sculpture depicting Jesus in the lap of mother Mary after the crucifixion that will bring tears to your eyes.
