CA 190 Damage at Furnace Creek - The Day After

STORY: The entire road had been washed away below the Furnace Creek Inn in Death Valley during the night of Aug. 15, 2004. Part of the old adobe of the Inn itself was torn away. The road was completely washed away for miles, even from over the large storm drain pictured here to the left of the van. This spot was a major gateway to California for the 49ers in the Gold Rush era who crossed Death Valley in Twenty-Mule Teams. One canyon a dozen miles east is named for them still today. Around the corner to the left of the Inn, the Furnace Creek Ranch survived, but the whole area here lost water and power for a long time.
